Fence Calculator (Metric)
Enter your fence length, post spacing, and gates to get the posts, panels, and gate posts you need.
What your result means
Posts is your main purchase count, and it already includes the two heavy-duty gate posts and an end post. Panels is the number of sections between posts. Fencing length is your total run minus the gate openings, which is the picket or panel material you'll cover.
How to use this calculator
- Measure your total fence perimeter in feet, walking the boundary.
- Decide post spacing. 2.4 m is standard; 1.8 m gives a sturdier fence.
- Count gates and enter their width (3-1.2 m for walk-through, 8+ ft for vehicles).
- Read the post count, panel count, and gate post count.
- Add 1-2 spare posts for damage or replacement.
The formula
Subtract the gate widths from your total length to get the run that actually needs fencing. Divide that by your post spacing and round up for panels. Posts equal panels, plus one end post, plus two posts per gate.
Worked example
Say you're running a 30.5 m fence with posts every 2.4 m and one 4-foot gate. Enter 100, 8, 1, and 4. You'll get 29.3 m of actual fencing, 12 panels, and 15 posts total: 12 line posts, 1 end post, and 2 gate posts.
Fence cost by type (installed)
| Fence type | Installed cost (per linear ft) |
|---|---|
| Chain link | $10 – $25 |
| Wood (privacy) | $20 – $45 |
| Vinyl | $25 – $60 |
Tips & gotchas
- Standard wood-fence post spacing is 2.4 m. Tighten it to 1.8 m if you're in a high-wind area.
- Gates need two heavy-duty posts, one on each side, and they're beefier than your line posts.
- Set posts a third of their length in the ground, so 2 to 0.9 m for an 2.4 m post.
- Concrete the line posts, and always concrete the gate posts since they carry more load.
- Buy 5-10% extra panels so you've got replacements when one gets damaged.
Frequently asked questions
How far apart should fence posts be?
6 to 2.4 m for wood. Chain link can stretch to 3 m. Go tighter in windy spots.
How deep should fence posts be?
A third of their length, 0.6 m minimum, and below the frost line in cold climates.
Do I need a permit for a fence?
Often, yes. Most cities require one for fences over 1.8 m and for anything in the front yard. Check your local code first.
How much does a fence cost to install?
Roughly $20 to $45 per linear ft for wood installed, $25 to $60 for vinyl, and $10 to $25 for chain link.
Can I split fence cost with a neighbor?
Yes, if it sits on the property line. Get the agreement in writing before you start.
