How to use this calculator ↓

What your result means

Pavers is the count you buy, with waste already in it. Buy from a single production run so the color matches, and grab one extra bundle to stash for repairs since lots drift over time. The area figure is your patio surface, handy for ordering base and bedding sand.

How to use this calculator

  1. Measure the area length and width in feet.
  2. Check paver size from package or specs (common sizes: 4x8, 6x6, 6x9).
  3. Use 10% waste for straight patterns, 15% for diagonal or curved layouts.
  4. Read paver count needed.
  5. Buy one extra bundle for future repairs.

The formula

areaSqIn = length * width * 144 paverSqIn = paverL * paverW pavers = ceil((areaSqIn / paverSqIn) * (1 + waste/100))

Convert your patio area to square inches (length times width times 144), divide by one paver's square inches for the base count, add your waste percentage, and round up.

Worked example

Say you're laying a 12 by 10 ft patio with 4 by 8 inch pavers and 10% waste. That's 120 sq ft, or 17,280 sq inches, and each paver covers 32. You get 540 base pavers, 594 with waste. Order an extra bundle and tuck it away for repairs.

Tips & gotchas

  • 4 by 8 inch brick pavers are the most common size.
  • Buy from one production run. Color shifts between batches and you won't match it later.
  • Add 10% waste for a straight pattern, 15-20% for herringbone or curves.
  • Order one extra bundle for future repairs.
  • Stash those spares somewhere protected so you've got a color match down the road.
