Retaining Wall Cost Calculator

Enter your wall length and height and an installed price per square foot to estimate the cost of a retaining wall.

How to use this calculator ↓

What your result means

Total cost is the wall face area times your installed price per square foot. That price already bundles block, base, and labor, but add 10 to 20% for drainage and excavation, which the per-foot figure usually leaves out. A wall over 4 ft also needs engineering, often $500 to $2,000 for the design.

How to use this calculator

  1. Measure wall length and height.
  2. Get installed cost per sq ft of wall face from quotes.
  3. Read total cost.
  4. Add 10-20% for drainage and base prep.
  5. Walls over 4 ft tall need engineering - add $500-2000 for design.

The formula

wallSqFt = length * height totalCost = wallSqFt * costPerSqFt

Wall face area is length times height. Multiply by your installed price per square foot for the total.

Worked example

Say you've got a 30 ft long, 4 ft tall wall at $30 a square foot installed. The face is 120 sq ft, so the wall runs $3,600. Add 15% for drainage and excavation and budget about $4,140.

Retaining wall installed cost by material (per sq ft of face)

MaterialInstalled cost per sq ft
Concrete block (CMU)$20 – $40
Poured concrete$25 – $50
Natural stone$30 – $60

Tips & gotchas

  • A wall over 4 ft usually needs engineering and a permit.
  • Drainage adds 10 to 20% to the cost, and skipping it is how walls fail.
  • Site access moves the price a lot. A hard-to-reach spot costs more.
  • Block is the cheapest material; natural stone the most expensive.
  • Get three quotes. Retaining wall pricing is all over the map.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a retaining wall cost per foot?

$20 to $60 a linear foot for typical heights, depending on material.

What's the cheapest retaining wall material?

Concrete block (CMU) or interlocking landscape block.

Do I need a permit for a retaining wall?

Usually for anything over 4 ft. Check your local code.

How long do retaining walls last?

Block or concrete runs 40 to 100 years. Treated wood is more like 15 to 25.

Can I DIY a retaining wall?

Yes for walls under about 3 ft. Taller than that needs engineering and a pro.
