Epoxy Resin Calculator
Enter your area and the thickness in mils to get the gallons of epoxy resin needed for a coating or pour.
What your result means
This is the gallons of mixed resin to reach your thickness, based on one gallon covering 1,600 sq ft at one mil. Floor coatings run 10 to 30 mils; bar and table tops are much thicker, 60 to 100 mils, built up over several pours. Mix in small batches since resin starts curing the moment it's combined.
How to use this calculator
- Enter area in sq ft.
- Specify desired thickness in mils.
- Read gallons of resin needed.
- Order resin+hardener kit (mixed 2:1 or 1:1 by volume usually).
- Apply within working time (typically 30-45 minutes after mixing).
The formula
One gallon covers 1,600 sq ft at one mil thick. So the gallons needed is the area times the thickness in mils, divided by 1,600.
Worked example
Say you're coating 100 sq ft at 30 mils thick. That's 100 times 30, divided by 1,600, which is 1.88 gallons of mixed resin.
Resin thickness reference
| Application | Thickness |
|---|---|
| Floor coating | 10 – 30 mils |
| Self-leveling floor | ~125 mils (1/8 in) |
| Bar / table top | 60 – 100 mils |
Tips & gotchas
- One gallon covers 1,600 sq ft at one mil thick.
- Bar tops are usually 60 to 100 mils, done in multiple pours.
- Self-leveling resins flow out to about 1/8 inch on their own.
- Mix in small batches; resin starts curing right away.
- Pop air bubbles with a heat gun or torch as it sets.
Frequently asked questions
How much epoxy resin do I need?
One gallon covers 1,600 sq ft at one mil. Use the calculator for thicker pours.
What is a mil?
One thousandth of an inch, 0.001 inch.
How thick should a bar top be?
60 to 100 mils total, usually three or four layers.
How long does epoxy resin take to cure?
Tack-free in 2 to 6 hours, hard in 12 to 24, fully cured in about 7 days.
What's the difference between epoxy paint and resin?
Paint is thin, a single coat at 5 to 10 mils. Resin is thick, 50-plus mils for pours.
